Now, will anyone in the top ten try the hyper-ultra-ultra two stopper strategy? Don’t bet against it. If there is a safety car – and there has been every race at the Marina Bay Street Circuit – then its timing will be crucial. Lap one probably won’t affect things too much, though.
At the front it could come down to who blinks first – could the undercut work? Could staying out and hoping for a safety car work? So many questions yet to be answered.
Not that much further initially but a word for Force India, who brought several upgrades to Singapore. They appear to be working well with Sergio Perez qualifying in seventh and Esteban Ocon in ninth.
Perez was the standout performer of the midfield and his time was under a second away from Daniel Ricciardo‘s Red Bull in sixth and just over three tenths ahead of the Haas of Romain Grosjean in seventh.
Fernando Alonso too deserves credit for his 11th place in a McLaren that isn’t getting any quicker as the season goes on. With a free tyre choice the Spaniard has a chance of scoring his first points since Hungary if he finishes.
He’s had a total of six DNFs in nine races and three in the last four. Not ideal. Still, he has a good chance of keeping up his record of finishing in the points every time he actually finishes a race.
Stoffel Vandoorne‘s limited (he is being booted our for Lando Norris next season) time in the other McLaren isn’t getting any better, either. He qualified in a lowly 18th. Still, it was his best qualifying since the 16th in Hungary but he has been out-qualified by Alonso every race this season and hasn’t made it into Q2 since Canada. Ouch.
After a good weekend in Monza, scoring three points and with both cars in the top 10, Williams are back to the back with the slowest car.
Good afternoon F1 fans!

I have just about recovered from Lewis Hamilton‘s stunning pole lap yesterday, which was a whole three tenths of a second ahead of second-placed man Max Verstappen, six tenths ahead of Sebastian Vettel – who was favourite for pole ahead of qualifying – and seven tenths quicker than team-mate Valtteri Bottas.
Hamilton’s race engineer Peter Bonnington described it as an “epic lap", which seems about right. Even if the word is vastly overused these days. Hamilton himself was pleased, too. As you might expect.
“Wow. That felt like magic. I don’t know where it came from. I am super overwhelmed. I am absolutely overwhelmed. My heart is racing. I might have an anxiety attack in a second," he said.
Overstating it a little, perhaps, but it was a lap that blew everyone else out of the water and really shocked the paddock.
“There wasn’t a moment in the lap where I ran wide, or there were any problems. I was just perfectly to the limit. It felt special and one of the best laps that I can remember feeling," Hamilton said.
